# Your preferences

> How Scaling looks for you, set once and kept on every device and organisation.

Open **Settings**, then **Preferences** under **Personal**.
These settings are yours alone.
They follow you to every device you sign in on and to every organisation you belong to.
Anything you never change follows Scaling's default, including when that default changes.
Once you change a setting, it stays at what you chose.
Select **Use default** beside it to hand it back to Scaling's default.

## Appearance

* **Theme** is Light, Dark, or System.
System follows your device, so Scaling goes dark when your device does.
* **Chat width** is how much of a session's screen the chat takes beside the plan, preview and diff on a wide screen.
Narrow, Default and Wide set where the chat starts, and you can still drag the divider during a visit.
On a phone the chat already takes the whole screen, so this setting changes nothing there.
* **Interface font size** is the size of Scaling's text, from 12 to 18 px.
  The default is 14.
* **Code font size** is the size of code, commands and diffs, from 11 to 16 px.
  The default is 12.
It leaves the rest of the text alone, and the interface size leaves code alone.
* **Preview** shows a message and a command at your chat width and your font sizes, so you can see the choices before you leave the page.

Each change saves as you make it.
For a font size, it saves a moment after you stop typing, or when you leave the box.
A size outside its range is set to the nearest size in range.
If a change cannot be saved, the row says so and goes back to what your account has, so you can try again.

Everyone gets Scaling's own typefaces, so there is no font choice.
