# Connecting Slack

> Connect your Slack workspace to your organisation so Scaling can post where your team already reads.

## What connecting does

Connecting Slack lets Scaling join one Slack workspace on behalf of your organisation.
An organisation connects one workspace, and a workspace belongs to one organisation at a time.
There are no keys to copy: you approve Scaling once, in Slack, and Scaling holds what it needs from there.

## Connect your workspace

Only an **admin** of your Scaling organisation can connect a workspace.

1. Choose **Settings** at the foot of the sidebar, then **Slack** under **Organisation**.
2. Choose **Connect Slack**.
3. Slack opens and shows what Scaling is asking for. Approve it.

Slack sends you back to **Settings**, **Slack**.
The page now says **Connected to** and the name of your workspace, with who connected it and the day, such as **by Dana, 4 Oct**.

## Who can do this

Only admins can open **Settings**, **Slack**, and see whether Slack is connected and to which workspace.
A member who opens its link is told that only admins can open the page, and is offered **Go to Preferences**.

## If it does not connect

Each of these shows a sentence and a **Back to Slack settings** button.

If you cancel in Slack, the sentence is **Connecting Slack was cancelled. Nothing was connected.**
You can start again from **Connect Slack**.

If Slack itself refuses the connection, the sentence is **Slack refused the connection, so nothing was connected.**
Starting again will not help, so contact us.

If the workspace is already connected to another Scaling organisation, the sentence says so and nothing is linked.
Ask an admin of that organisation to disconnect it first, then connect again.

The link between Scaling and Slack works once, for the admin who started it, and for ten minutes.
If it has run out, was already used, or was started by someone else, the sentence says **We couldn't use this connection link**.
Start again from **Connect Slack** in one sitting.

An organisation connects one workspace at a time, so disconnect the current one before you connect another.

## Disconnect

On **Settings**, **Slack**, choose **Disconnect**.
The dialog **Disconnect Slack?** says that we stop using your workspace and delete our access to it.
Choose **Disconnect** in the dialog to confirm, or **Cancel** to leave it connected.
Scaling's app stays in your workspace's app list until a Slack admin removes it there.
You can connect again, to the same workspace or another, once the page shows **Connect Slack**.

If something goes wrong part-way, connecting or disconnecting, the page says **The connection to** your workspace **did not finish.**
Choose **Finish disconnecting** to try again; Scaling does not show Slack as connected until it holds access, or as disconnected while it may still hold it.

## Removing Scaling from inside Slack

If a Slack admin removes Scaling's app from your workspace, **Settings**, **Slack**, shows Slack as not connected the next time you open it, with **Connect Slack** available to an admin again.

## If Slack is missing from Settings

**Slack** appears under **Organisation** in the Settings sidebar, for admins, only where your Scaling deployment offers it.
